About Liu Roast Fish
Liu Roast Fish, located at 227 W Valley Blvd #128c in San Gabriel, California, has established itself as a culinary destination for those seeking an authentic yet contemporary take on Chinese grilled specialties. As part of a growing family of restaurants with additional locations in Milpitas, City of Industry, and Monterey Park, this establishment distinguishes itself through its mastery of traditional recipes refined by Chef Michael, a disciple of China’s renowned Master Chef JingXian Liu. The restaurant’s focus on meticulously seasoned, cured, and roasted dishes—particularly its signature grilled fish—has earned it a loyal following among patrons who appreciate the harmony of bold flavors and artisanal preparation techniques.
At the heart of Liu Roast Fish’s menu is its namesake dish: whole fish roasted to perfection with a proprietary blend of spices and aromatics. The process involves marinating fresh fish in a house-developed rub before slow-roasting it to achieve a crispy exterior and tender, flaky interior. This method, rooted in decades of culinary expertise, ensures each bite delivers a balanced combination of smokiness, umami, and subtle heat. The restaurant’s commitment to quality extends to its ingredient selection, prioritizing freshness and authenticity to recreate the vibrant flavors of Chinese street food while catering to modern dining expectations.
Beyond its flagship dish, the menu features an array of grilled skewers, including lamb, beef, and seafood options, all prepared using the same attention to detail. These skewers, often seasoned with cumin, chili, and other traditional spices, complement the main courses and reflect the diversity of Chinese barbecue culture. The inclusion of sides like crispy lotus root, garlic cucumber salad, and handmade noodles further enhances the communal dining experience, encouraging guests to share dishes family-style.
Operating hours from 11:30 AM to 11:30 PM on weekdays and extended service until midnight on weekends accommodate both lunch crowds and late-night diners, positioning the restaurant as a versatile choice for casual meals and group gatherings alike. The San Gabriel location’s proximity to major thoroughfares makes it easily accessible, while its online ordering system—available through platforms like DoorDash—ensures convenience for takeout and delivery patrons.
Liu Roast Fish’s success stems from its ability to bridge tradition and innovation. By preserving time-honored techniques while adapting to contemporary tastes, the restaurant appeals to a broad audience, from Chinese cuisine enthusiasts to newcomers eager to explore authentic flavors. The team’s dedication to consistency and hospitality is evident in every aspect of the dining experience, from the aromatic dishes served on sizzling platters to the attentive service that guides guests through the menu.
For those seeking franchising opportunities, the brand’s expansion strategy underscores its growing influence in the U.S. Chinese culinary scene. With contact numbers provided for partnership inquiries (909-955-8999 or 760-201-6999), Liu Roast Fish continues to extend its reach, bringing its signature dishes to new communities. Whether enjoyed in-house or at home, the restaurant’s offerings promise a memorable taste of China’s rich gastronomic heritage, reimagined for today’s discerning palate.

I came here having heard of their reputation of good roast fish, but didn’t expect them to have great skewers as well! The fish menu was really good. I ordered “mild” spicy and I could still cope with it just fine. The skewers have low salt options. They have the silk worm too. I grew up eating this and it’s not easy to find it in the US. The servers are very friendly and happy, pretty rare in this era!

This was my first time trying grilled Chinese fish and I loved every aspect of it. It was very easy to order and customize the type of fish, spiciness, and toppings, on the tablet. We ordered the Qing Jiang fish with tripe in two flavors: Liu’s Homestyle (Hot) and Golden Soup Garlic (Medium). The colors were no indication of the spice but I would recommend at least the hot spiciness level if you’re a spice lover. I ended up loving Liu’s Homestyle more and regretted not adding more toppings. They tuck it under the fish so that it absorbs all the flavor and marinates in the sauce for as long as possible. I also loved that the fish was piping hot at all times since it was served over a flame the whole time. I was really craving a scallion pancake but it turned out to be just alright. It was pretty doughy and there was no flakiness. I didn’t try the other two entrees of beef noodle soup and steamed milk buns but I was told they were just alright. Based on my experience of the fish alone though, I loved it.

The place is amazing. We’re a foodie blog called hungryladyla and to be honest we were not expecting too much. We knew it was gonna be good, but oh lord did we love every single plate we were offered. For us the desserts were the winners of the night

One of the best fried fish in town, their fish was very flavorful and not dry. The staffs were friendly and service was fast. Also their skewers were on point with other stores. One of their special is having two flavors, satisfy both spicy and non spicy perfect for groups that don’t like spicy and one loves spicy and can still share.

We tried their signature Grilled Fish, featuring one side with spicy seasoning and the other with garlic on black cod. We also enjoyed fresh cucumber salad, scallion tofu, crispy fried buns with condensed milk, and chicken chow mein. Overall, Lao Liu Jia Grilled Fish offers a delightful experience with diverse flavors that cater to every palate.
